Within the year she found herself solidly infatuated with a growing national movement known as Natural Building.

Today she can spot a good pile of clay at 70mph, turn almost any tree into a viable piece of structural art, and make a good smoothie to keep the crew going till the goal is met. She currently leads a small design-build company based in central Texas that provides design, general contracting, sub contracting, education and consultation in natural building.

Speakers are asked to present themselves to registration at least 1 hour prior to their scheduled time slot to receive their speaker package and be escorted to our hospitality area.

If your presentation is on electronic media, we prefer it to be in PowerPoint format, but can attempt to accommodate other media types. Use the file drop widget below to securely transfer your presentation to us no later than June 4th.

Lessons learned from 2012:

We encourage you to bring a backup copy on your thumb drive, but even that may not be enough. One presenter forgot to send their presentation ahead of time and relied solely on the thumb drive. Unfortunately, the thumb drive was pulled too early, got corrupted, and the entire presentation had to be cancelled at the time slot.

There are only 5 realistic minutes to prep your presentation after the previous speaker finishes. You will be assigned a guide to help you find your room on time and more importantly, mark your remaining time with cue cards in the back.

Wi-Fi is available and should now be stronger/faster than last year, but keep that in mind if needing to run external videos such as YouTube.

The Texas Drought Project is undertaken by the Texas Harambe Foundation of Austin, together with sponsorship from Texans for Peace and community partnership from organizations like the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. It brings together experts in farming, ranching, hydrology, civil engineering, climatology, and environmental science to present forums in key regions most affected by drought. The subject matter ranges from recognition of indicators of climate change, recommendations for modifications to policies governing water, methods of conservation, and solutions to the overall problem. Targeted audiences include students, academics, farmers and ranchers, and those most affected by the ravages of climate change, lower-income residents. Special attention focuses on lower-income indigenous and immigrant populations, which have fewer resources for adaptation and which consequently present with obstacles for transition.

Directing the Texas Drought Project is Alyssa Burgin, who has served as outreach and media director of Texans for Peace since 2002. Ms. Burgin brings to this effort over twenty years of experience in community organizing, and has traversed the state of Texas many times on behalf of issues in the social justice realm. She is the organizer of “Teaching Peace in Texas Schools,” and assembled conferences and exhibits for groups ranging from the South Texas Alliance for Peace and Justice to the Walls Symposium at Trinity University. Additionally, she has done media advancework in national political campaigns, and international crisis media consulting for the Christian Peacemaker Teams. She holds degrees in writing and communications from the University of Texas.

Kerry and Becky Getter founded Balcones Resources in 1994 in Austin, Texas. In the mid-’90s the only commodity being actively recycled in a commercial setting was white paper, and the Balcones team saw the need to change the way Texas recycled. “We had an opportunity to make an impact both environmentally and economically,” remarked Kerry. Balcones introduced the Anything that Tears™ program, which simplified office recycling and allowed property managers to quickly quantify their efforts through monthly environmental reports and a reduction of costs related to landfill hauling fees.

Kerry remembers, “It was a challenge at first because we really had to get into the trenches and educate everyone involved in an organization. The janitorial crews were very important because we needed to move the material efficiently and effectively throughout the buildings, and their buy-in was crucial to the success of the program. Education became a necessary component, and we started to see the fruits of our labor in the form of increased participation and a reduction in waste from the different locations we serviced.”

Fast-forward 18 years, and we have facilities in Austin, Dallas and Little Rock and have grown to become one of the top 50 recyclers in North America. We service approximately 75% of Austin’s Class A office buildings and 80% of the Class A buildings in downtown Dallas. In addition to multi-tenant facilities, Balcones is also the chosen recycling partner for several corporate campuses, manufacturing facilities and distribution centers with major customers such as the University of Texas at Austin, the Capitol Complex, Seton Hospital System, Pepsico, JCPenney and the Clinton Library, just to name a few.

Composting isn’t a new idea, of course, but few people may know that for more than 20 years, Organics by Gosh has been the leader in commercial composting in Central Texas—o?ering service to a variety of businesses and industries from hotels, schools and cafeterias to manufacturers and grocery stores. The company hauls just about anything that was once alive, including plants, trees, grass, shrubs and food. They collect it and place it in mound upon mound of composting earth. The ?nished product results in an entire retail selection of potting soils, fertilizer and decorative “stone,” much of which is sold to landscaping companies as well as area nurseries and large home-improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Owner Phil Gosh has been in the composting business most of his life—taking over his father’s Houston-area business in the 1970s and launching Organics by Gosh in Austin in 1995. For Gosh, the business is simply about managing our resources well. “We’ve created a program that allows us to take a product and create a higher value out of it,” says Gosh. “All of our composting material comes from within a 30-mile radius to keep our energy local. Instead of trash, it’s a resource…a treasure.”

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines conventional aquaculture, (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks), with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In aquaculture, effluents accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity for the fish. This water is led to a hydroponic system where the by-products from the aquaculture are broken down by nitrogen fixing bacteria, then filtered out by the plants as nutrients, after which the cleaned water is recirculated back to the animals.

As existing hydroponic and aquaculture farming techniques form the basis for all aquaponics systems, the size, complexity, and types of foods grown in an aquaponics system can vary as much as any system found in either distinct farming discipline.

LaVerne Williams, AIA, LEED AP, is one of the nation’s top green building professionals and a Texas pioneer of energy-efficient green home design that strives for sustainability.

Williams dared to open an ecologically oriented architectural practice in 1975, when few people cared about buildings that attempted to work in harmony with the environment and micro-climates. Starting a green building industry design practice that focused wholistically on quality of life issues was a lonely, gutsy business move in a time when President Jimmy Carter was laughed at for wearing a sweater in the White House and the price for a barrel of oil was only twelve bucks. Call him a visionary or a motivated risk taker, as a young architect, Williams knew his moral character would not allow him to continue to work in the architecture profession unless buildings wholistically address overall quality of life issues. Even back in the ’70s, he understood that current building practices were unsustainable. So he put his philosophy to work – literally – and created a niche company, an architectural practice called Environment Associates, Architects & Consultants that has become a national leader.

Williams became an outspoken, positive educator about the need for sustainable, energy-saving, healthful buildings and lifestyles. Through his willingness to teach and mentor others, his practice and his influence grew. In Texas, he is regarded as the “Grandfather of Green Building.”

Texas Water Savers Co. helps customers learn to build rain harvesting systems that provide money-saving, high-quality household water.

“Have the best of all worlds … when you do it yourself and you save a lot of money,” said Scott Shaffer, a partner in the La Grange-based business. Texas Water Savers also is licensed by the state for water treatment services.

Even in our deeply drought-stricken area, collecting rainwater using a cistern can make sense. For example, Shaffer said, in a region where it rains only 15 to 20 inches per year, someone can afford to rely on a 10,000-gallon cistern and get by with one water delivery when the rainwater runs out.

Texas Water Savers conducts weekend workshops to show people how to design, test and price a system. Among the major environmental appeals of rainwater harvesting is preventing water runoff and erosion.
